JOB DESCRIPTION – TOOL & DIE MAKER
Company: Shiv Shakti PressTech Private Limited (SSPPL)
Department: Tool Room / Tool & Die
Position: Tool & Die Maker
Reporting To: Tool Room In-charge / Production Head
Location: MIDC Rabale, Navi Mumbai
Employment Type: Full-Time
1. Job Purpose
To manufacture, maintain, repair, modify and troubleshoot press tools, dies, fixtures and related tooling used for precision sheet-metal component manufacturing, ensuring high accuracy, tool life, productivity and quality.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Tool & Die Manufacturing
- Manufacture progressive, compound, bending, piercing, blanking and other press tools as per drawings and specifications.
- Perform fitting, grinding, drilling, tapping, reaming and other tool-room operations.
- Assemble and set punches, dies, guide pillars, bushes, springs and other tool components.
- Ensure dimensional accuracy and proper fitment of all tool components.
B. Tool Maintenance & Repair
- Carry out preventive and breakdown maintenance of press tools.
- Identify tool wear, damage, misalignment and recurring tool-related problems.
- Repair, modify and recondition tools to restore performance.
- Maintain proper records of tool maintenance, repairs and modifications.
C. Tool Setting & Trials
- Assist in setting and trialing tools on mechanical and power presses.
- Conduct tool trials and identify problems such as burrs, cracks, dimensional variation, improper feeding and component deformation.
- Make necessary corrections to achieve approved component quality.
- Coordinate with Production and Quality teams during tool trials.
D. Drawing & Technical Understanding
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, tool drawings and component drawings.
- Understand tolerances, GD&T, material specifications and surface-finish requirements.
- Follow tool design specifications and approved manufacturing methods.
- Coordinate with the Design/Engineering team for tool modifications and improvements.
E. Tool Improvement & Productivity
- Identify opportunities to improve tool life, cycle time and component quality.
- Suggest modifications to reduce tool breakdowns and production stoppages.
- Support Kaizen, 5S and continuous-improvement activities in the Tool Room.
- Maintain proper housekeeping and safe working practices.
3. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Tool manufacturing completed within planned time.
- Tool trial success rate.
- Tool breakdown frequency.
- Tool life and maintenance performance.
- Reduction in production stoppages due to tooling issues.
- Accuracy and quality of manufactured tools.
- Response time for tool breakdowns and repairs.
- Rejection/rework caused by tooling issues.
- Compliance with Tool Room 5S and safety standards.
4. Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of press tools and dies.
- Good understanding of sheet-metal stamping processes.
- Ability to read engineering and tool drawings.
- Good knowledge of measuring instruments such as Vernier, micrometer, height gauge and gauges.
- Strong fitting and troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge of tool steels, carbide and other tool materials.
- Ability to identify root causes of tooling problems.
- Good attention to dimensional accuracy and workmanship.
- Teamwork and coordination with Production, Quality and Design departments.
5. Educational Qualification & Experience
Qualification: ITI – Tool & Die Maker / Fitter or equivalent technical qualification.
Experience: Preferably 8-10 years of relevant experience in a sheet-metal press tool / die manufacturing environment.
Candidates with experience in progressive dies, compound dies, bending tools and precision press components will be preferred.
6. Safety & Discipline
- Follow all Tool Room and factory safety procedures.
- Use appropriate PPE while operating machines and handling tools.
- Maintain cleanliness and 5S in the Tool Room.
- Ensure machines, tools and equipment are operated safely.
- Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment and potential hazards immediately.
