Engineering Trainee

Job Title: Trainee Design Engineer – Instrumentation & Control 

Department: Engineering & Design (EPC) 

Location: Engineering Head Office / Design Center 

Reports To: Lead / Senior Design Engineer (Instrumentation) 

Job Purpose 

The Instrumentation Trainee Design Engineer will undergo structured training to master the 

core principles of detail engineering and design for large-scale EPC projects. Working under 

the guidance of senior mentors, the trainee will learn to use industry-standard design tools to 

create precise specifications, drawings, and data sheets required for procurement and 

construction. 

Key Responsibilities 

1. Detail Engineering & Document Generation 

 Learn to prepare and regularly update essential engineering documents, including the 

Instrument Index, I/O Lists, Cable Schedules, Interconnection Diagrams, and Junction 

Box (JB) schedules. 

 Assist in drafting instrument location layouts, cable tray routing layouts, and 

instrument hook-up drawings. 

 Help develop loop diagrams, logic diagrams, and functional design specifications 

under senior supervision. 

2. P&ID Review & Process Integration 

 Learn to read and interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & 

Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). 

 Assist in cross-checking P&IDs against the instrument index to ensure zero mismatch 

in tag numbers and data. 

 Collaborate with the Process and Piping design teams to understand physical line 

routing and instrument sizing requirements. 

3. Procurement Engineering Support 

 Assist in preparing technical data sheets for field instruments (pressure, temperature, 

flow, level), control valves, safety valves, and analytical systems. 

 Help compile Material Requisition (MR) packages for vendor bidding. 

 Support the review of vendor drawings and technical offers to ensure compliance with 

project specifications. 

4. Quality Control & Standards Compliance 

 Ensure all drafts and documents adhere to company drafting standards and project 

quality procedures. 

 Learn and apply relevant international engineering codes and standards (e.g., ISA, 

IEC, IEEE, API, ASME). 

 Maintain strict revision control and organization of the project master document 

registry. 

Job Requirements & Qualifications 

 Education: Min. BSc. Physics 

 Experience: Fresher (0 to 1 year). Process industry internship experience 

(Oil & Gas, Chemical, Power, Water) is a plus. 

 Technical Skills: 

o Strong fundamental knowledge of electronics, control systems, and 

measurement principles. 

o Basic proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation is required. 

o Familiarity with or academic exposure to 3D modeling environments (e.g., 

E3D, PDMS, SP3D) or SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI / INtools) is highly 

advantageous. 

 Soft Skills: 

o High level of attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and drafting. 

o Excellent written and verbal communication skills for team collaboration. 

o Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
