Job Description
Junior Interior DesignerPosition OverviewThe Junior Interior Designer will work directly under the Chief Interior Designer and will be responsible for supporting, coordinating, documenting, and executing the interior design process across assigned residential and commercial projects.
The role is not limited to design assistance. The Junior Interior Designer is expected to progressively develop complete project ownership and act as the operational design lead whenever the Chief Interior Designer is unavailable. The individual must be capable of taking a project from design development through documentation, client coordination, execution support, and final closure while maintaining the design intent, technical standards, timelines, and quality benchmarks established by the Chief Interior Designer.

Works closely with: Founder / Design Team / Project Execution Team / Vendors / Contractors / Clients
Primary Function: Design development, technical documentation, project coordination, and design-process ownership
- 1. Design Development & AssistanceAssist the Chief Interior Designer in developing interior design concepts, spatial layouts, material palettes, furniture selections, lighting concepts, finishes, and design details.
- Translate design direction into practical and technically executable design solutions.
- Prepare and modify:
- Floor plans
- Furniture layouts
- Ceiling plans
- Flooring layouts
- Elevations
- Wall treatments
- Joinery details
- Electrical layouts
- Lighting layouts
- Material schedules
- Furniture and accessory schedules
- Other project-specific drawings and documentation.
- Support preparation of mood boards, material boards, design presentations, sample selections, and client-facing design documentation.
- Conduct design research and identify suitable materials, products, finishes, furniture, fixtures, lighting, hardware, and accessories.
- Maintain consistency between the approved design concept and subsequent technical drawings and execution requirements.
2. Project Process ManagementThe Junior Interior Designer will be expected to understand and execute the company's complete interior design workflow.
Responsibilities include:
- Understand the project brief, client requirements, scope, budget, site conditions, and design objectives.
- Maintain accurate project information and ensure all relevant inputs are captured before design development.
- Follow the prescribed internal design process and project milestones.
- Maintain project-wise documentation and ensure drawings, selections, revisions, approvals, and decisions are systematically recorded.
- Track pending design decisions, client inputs, material selections, drawings, approvals, and other dependencies.
- Ensure that no design decision or client requirement is lost during project progression.
- Coordinate the transition from conceptual design to technical documentation and execution.
- Identify design, technical, material, or execution issues at an early stage and escalate them appropriately.
3. Project Ownership in the Absence of the Chief Interior DesignerA key responsibility of this position is to act as the design owner for assigned projects whenever the Chief Interior Designer is unavailable.
During such periods, the Junior Interior Designer must:
- Take complete operational responsibility for maintaining project continuity.
- Understand the current project status, approved design direction, pending decisions, and outstanding deliverables.
- Coordinate with the client and relevant internal/external stakeholders within the authority delegated by the Chief Interior Designer.
- Review and resolve routine design and technical queries.
- Coordinate drawing revisions and design clarifications.
- Ensure project timelines and deliverables continue without interruption.
- Communicate issues requiring senior-level decisions to the Chief Interior Designer or management.
- Prevent delays caused by missing information, unresolved design decisions, or lack of coordination.
- Ensure that the project continues to follow the approved design intent and company standards.
- Maintain a complete handover trail so that the Chief Interior Designer can resume the project without loss of context.
The expectation is that the Junior Interior Designer should not become a bottleneck when the Chief Interior Designer is unavailable.
- 4. Technical Drawing & DocumentationPrepare accurate and detailed technical drawings as required for execution.
- Develop drawings from approved concepts and design intent.
- Ensure dimensions, levels, materials, specifications, annotations, references, and details are accurate.
- Coordinate drawings across disciplines where applicable.
- Identify inconsistencies between architectural conditions, interior design requirements, furniture, electrical, lighting, plumbing, ceiling, flooring, and joinery.
- Revise drawings based on approved changes while maintaining proper version control.
- Ensure only the latest approved drawings are circulated for execution.
- Maintain an organized digital drawing and documentation system.
- 5. Site Coordination & Execution SupportVisit project sites as required to understand actual site conditions and monitor design implementation.
- Verify critical site dimensions and conditions before finalizing drawings.
- Coordinate with contractors, carpenters, fabricators, vendors, and other execution partners on design-related requirements.
- Clarify design details and drawing interpretations at site.
- Identify deviations from approved design intent.
- Report quality, dimensional, material, or execution discrepancies.
- Support the Chief Interior Designer in resolving site-level design issues.
- Verify that executed work corresponds with approved drawings, specifications, and material selections.
- Document site observations, pending issues, decisions, and corrective actions.
- 6. Material & Product CoordinationResearch and shortlist materials, finishes, fixtures, furniture, lighting, hardware, fabrics, accessories, and other design elements.
- Prepare and maintain material and product schedules.
- Verify product specifications, dimensions, finishes, availability, lead times, and suitability for the application.
- Coordinate samples and physical material approvals.
- Ensure approved materials are correctly communicated to execution teams and vendors.
- Maintain records of approved and rejected materials.
- Flag substitutions or deviations before implementation.
- 7. Client CoordinationParticipate in client meetings, presentations, design discussions, and site meetings.
- Communicate design information clearly and professionally.
- Record client feedback and convert it into actionable design revisions.
- Track approvals and pending decisions.
- Ensure client changes are properly documented before implementation.
- Maintain professional communication while protecting the approved project scope, design intent, and timelines.
- Escalate commercial, scope, or high-impact design decisions when required.
8. Quality ControlThe Junior Interior Designer will be responsible for maintaining a high level of accuracy across all design deliverables.
This includes checking:
- Dimensions
- Drawing coordination
- Material specifications
- Furniture dimensions
- Joinery details
- Lighting positions
- Electrical requirements
- Ceiling coordination
- Flooring patterns
- Finish transitions
- Design consistency
- Drawing revisions
- Site execution against approved design
- Material and product specifications
All drawings and design documents must undergo an appropriate self-check before being submitted to the Chief Interior Designer, client, vendor, or execution team.
- 9. Design Standards & Design IntentUnderstand the company's design language, quality standards, detailing philosophy, and preferred materials.
- Maintain consistency across projects without compromising project-specific design requirements.
- Ensure design decisions are aesthetically coherent as well as technically and commercially practical.
- Develop sufficient understanding of material behaviour, construction methods, joinery, lighting, finishes, furniture, and site execution to identify impractical design proposals before they reach execution.
- 10. Project Tracking & Internal CoordinationMaintain updated project trackers and design schedules.
- Track deliverables, approvals, revisions, site requirements, and pending actions.
- Maintain clear records of project decisions and changes.
- Coordinate dependencies between design, procurement, execution, and client approvals.
- Proactively follow up on pending inputs rather than waiting for instructions.
- Highlight risks to timelines, quality, budget, or design intent at the earliest possible stage.
Required Technical CompetenciesThe candidate should have working proficiency in relevant interior design and documentation tools, including as applicable:
- AutoCAD
- SketchUp
- 3D modelling/rendering software
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe InDesign / Illustrator
- Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets
- Presentation software
- Other design documentation and visualization tools used by the company
The candidate must be comfortable producing both conceptual and technical design documentation, not only visual presentations.

Core Role ObjectiveTo function as the Chief Interior Designer's primary design and project-support resource, while developing the technical, managerial, and decision-making capability required to independently take ownership of interior design projects and maintain their progress, quality, and design intent whenever the Chief Interior Designer is unavailable.
