JOB DESCRIPTION – MECHANICAL PRODUCTION ENGINEER
1. Position Details
Job Title-Mechanical Production Engineer
Department-Production / Manufacturing
Industry-Engineering / Manufacturing
Reporting To-Production Manager / Plant Head
Location-As per company requirement
Employment Type-Full-Time
2. Job Purpose
The Mechanical Production Engineer is responsible for planning, supervising, and controlling day-to-day manufacturing activities to ensure production targets are achieved safely, efficiently, and according to required quality standards.
The role involves managing production processes, manpower, machines, tools, materials, productivity, and process improvements while minimizing downtime, rejection, and production losses.
3. Key Responsibilities
- A. Production Planning & Execution
- Plan daily and weekly production activities according to the production schedule.
- Ensure production targets are achieved within the planned time.
- Monitor production quantity, cycle time, efficiency, and productivity.
- Coordinate with Planning, Quality, Maintenance, Stores, and Purchase departments.
- Ensure smooth flow of production from raw material to finished product.
- Identify production bottlenecks and take corrective action.
- B. Machine & Process Management
- Monitor the performance of production machines and equipment.
- Ensure machines are operated according to defined operating parameters.
- Analyze machine downtime and coordinate with the Maintenance Department for corrective action.
- Improve machine utilization and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
- Ensure proper use and availability of tools, fixtures, gauges, and equipment.
- Support new machine installation, trial runs, and process validation.
- C. Manpower Management
- Allocate operators and helpers according to production requirements.
- Monitor manpower utilization and productivity.
- Provide technical guidance and on-job training to operators.
- Ensure operators follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Monitor absenteeism and coordinate manpower replacement when required.
- Maintain discipline and safe working practices on the shop floor.
- D. Quality Control
- Ensure production is carried out according to drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Work closely with the Quality Department to control defects and rejection.
- Investigate production-related quality problems and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure first-piece inspection and in-process inspection requirements are followed.
- Reduce rework, rejection, scrap, and customer complaints.
- Maintain proper production and quality records.
- E. Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities for improving productivity, quality, and production efficiency.
- Implement Kaizen, 5S, Lean Manufacturing, and continuous improvement activities.
- Reduce cycle time, setup time, material wastage, and machine downtime.
- Develop and implement improved manufacturing methods.
- Participate in root-cause analysis using tools such as 5 Why, Fishbone Diagram, and Pareto Analysis.
- Support cost-reduction and productivity-improvement projects.
- F. Safety & 5S
- Ensure employees follow company safety procedures and PPE requirements.
- Maintain proper housekeeping and workplace organization.
- Implement and monitor 5S activities on the production floor.
- Identify unsafe conditions and take corrective action.
- Report accidents, near misses, and unsafe practices to the concerned department.
- G. Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare daily production reports.
- Maintain production, rejection, downtime, and efficiency records.
- Monitor production KPIs and prepare performance reports.
- Maintain process-related documents, checklists, and work instructions.
- Report production issues and improvement actions to the Production Manager.
- 4. Required Technical Knowledge
- Mechanical manufacturing processes
- Production planning and control
- Engineering drawings and GD&T basics
- Machine tools and manufacturing equipment
- CNC / conventional machining knowledge, where applicable
- Welding, fabrication, assembly, or sheet-metal processes, as applicable
- Measuring instruments and inspection methods
- Tooling, fixtures, and jigs
- Production quality standards
- Lean Manufacturing
- 5S and Kaizen
- Root Cause Analysis
- OEE and productivity improvement
- Basic knowledge of ERP/MRP systems
5. QualificationsEducation:
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Experience:
- Typically 2–5 years of experience in production/manufacturing.
- Experience in a mechanical engineering or industrial manufacturing environment is preferred.

- Escalate machine breakdowns, material shortages, quality issues, and production delays.
9. Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate should be a technically strong Mechanical Engineer with practical shop-floor experience, good problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage production activities and teams. The candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and focused on Safety + Quality + Delivery + Cost + Productivity.
