As part of Shell Shipping & Maritime's Assurance (SAFE) Team, you will use your operational maritime experience to support improvements in safety, environmental performance, compliance, and digitalization. The role offers the opportunity to build expertise in assurance activities and understand their link to commercial risk exposure.

Working within a global team of maritime professionals across Singapore, Rotterdam, London, Houston, and Chennai, you will collaborate with vessel operators worldwide in a diverse and inclusive environment where safety is the highest priority.

You will support the implementation of the Transport Safety Standard and Maritime Safety requirements by coordinating the vetting of internationally trading tankers, dry bulk carriers, and project vessels. The objective is to help ensure Shell does not use or become associated with sub-standard vessels, minimizing risks to people, the environment, Shell's reputation, and the business.

What you’ll be doing

  • Play a key role in positively vetting cargo transport vessels in line with the Transport Safety Standard, Maritime Safety requirements, and the Vetting Manual.
  • Assist in maintaining established Maritime Assurance procedures and projects.
  • Develop and maintain the competence required to support GMAS Vessel Clearance Checks for Deceptive Shipping Practices, working closely with Trade Compliance teams.
  • Provide ongoing support for vetting services through collaborative activities across the business.
  • Maintain the Group Maritime Assurance System (GMAS) database of vessels and locations, while prioritizing activities within the GMAS To-Do List.
  • Support the Maritime Vetting Team in maintaining professional relationships with:
  • Internal customers including STASCO, Freight, Trading & Supply, and Operations Units.
  • External stakeholders including Ship Owners, Oil Companies, Ship Managers, OCIMF, and CDI.
  • Foster a spirit of partnership through management of the SAFE Team phone and mailbox.
  • Support business performance reviews through data gathering, analysis, and reporting.
  • Help ensure the availability of eligible vessel launches globally, enabling faster decision-making and improved business opportunities.
  • Represent the SAFE Team in engagements with external stakeholders, contributing to Shell's reputation within the maritime industry.
  • Support the dynamic needs of the Trading business by providing a responsive vetting service that meets business chartering requirements.

What you bring

  • At least 1 year sea time (may consider 6 months) as Junior Deck or Engineer Officer on ocean going tankers (LNG, LPG, Chemical, Crude, Products)
  • Candidates who hold or have held a OOW (Deck or Engineering) Certificate of Competency issued by a recognized flag or possess equivalent shore-based maritime experience.
  • Ability to support Maritime Vetting operations during Houston business hours through a night shift work pattern based in Chennai.
  • Recent operational or business experience that can be utilized to manage current and emerging maritime risks.
  • Evidence of your resilience and ability to successfully manage challenges and conflicts.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills.
  • Success in this role requires the ability to remain rational, composed, professional, and productive under pressure.
