Job Description
Senior Port Infrastructure Engineer
Position Summary
The Senior Port Infrastructure Engineer will be responsible for the planning, design, technical coordination, and delivery of port, marine, and associated landside infrastructure projects. The role requires strong civil and maritime engineering expertise, with particular emphasis on port infrastructure, marine structures, terminal facilities, pavement and utility systems, and multidisciplinary design coordination.
The position will support projects from feasibility and concept development through detailed design, tender documentation, construction support, and commissioning. The engineer will work closely with clients, port operators, contractors, specialist consultants, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Port & Marine Infrastructure Design
- Lead and undertake engineering design for port and marine infrastructure, including:
- Quay walls and berthing structures
- Jetties, piers, dolphins, and access trestles
- Ro-Ro ramps and ferry facilities
- Breakwaters and coastal protection works
- Revetments and shoreline structures
- Dredging and reclamation works
- Port basins, navigation channels, and turning circles
- Container, bulk, general cargo, and multipurpose terminal infrastructure
- Develop engineering solutions considering vessel characteristics, operational requirements, geotechnical conditions, marine environment, constructability, durability, and whole-life performance.
- Review and coordinate structural, geotechnical, coastal, pavement, drainage, utilities, and marine systems designs.
Landside Port Infrastructure
- Develop and review designs for:
- Heavy-duty port pavements and container yards
- Internal port roads and access infrastructure
- Terminal drainage systems
- Utility corridors and service networks
- Rail interfaces where applicable
- Terminal buildings and ancillary infrastructure interfaces
- Gates, security infrastructure, fencing, and operational areas
- Coordinate infrastructure layouts with terminal planning and cargo-handling equipment requirements, including STS cranes, RTGs/RMGs, mobile harbour cranes, reach stackers, conveyors, and other terminal equipment.
Engineering Analysis & Technical Documentation
- Prepare and review:
- Feasibility and technical studies
- Basis of Design and design criteria
- Concept, preliminary, and detailed engineering designs
- Engineering calculations
- Technical specifications
- Design drawings
- Bills of quantities and cost estimates
- Tender documentation
- Technical reports and design submissions
- Undertake technical evaluations and option studies to identify appropriate engineering solutions.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant international and local standards, codes, client requirements, and good maritime engineering practice.
Tender & Procurement Support
- Support preparation of EPC, Design-Build, and traditional design-bid-build tender packages.
- Prepare scopes of work, technical specifications, drawings, schedules, and employer's requirements.
- Review contractor and consultant technical proposals.
- Participate in technical bid evaluations, clarifications, and tender negotiations.
- Review contractor design proposals, methodologies, value-engineering proposals, and alternative technical solutions.
Construction & Site Support
- Provide engineering support during construction.
- Review:
- Contractor design submissions
- Shop drawings
- Method statements
- Material submissions
- RFIs and technical queries
- Temporary works proposals
- Participate in site inspections and technical meetings as required.
- Assist in resolving design and construction interface issues.
- Review design changes and assess their technical, cost, programme, and operational implications.
- Support testing, commissioning, handover, and close-out activities.
Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Coordinate with:
- Structural engineers
- Geotechnical engineers
- Coastal and hydraulic engineers
- Dredging and reclamation specialists
- Terminal planners
- Roads and pavement engineers
- Drainage and utilities engineers
- Electrical and mechanical engineers
- Environmental specialists
- BIM/CAD teams
- Quantity surveyors and cost consultants
- Manage technical interfaces between marine structures, landside infrastructure, terminal operations, and cargo-handling systems.
- Participate in design reviews, workshops, HAZID/risk reviews, constructability reviews, and value-engineering exercises.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical guidance to engineers, designers, and CAD/BIM personnel.
- Review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports prepared by junior engineers.
- Ensure appropriate QA/QC procedures are implemented.
- Identify technical risks and develop mitigation measures.
- Promote technically robust, safe, constructible, sustainable, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
- Contribute to development and implementation of engineering standards and best practices within the port and maritime team.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Master's degree in Civil, Structural, Maritime, Coastal, Geotechnical, or Port Engineering is advantageous.
- Chartered Engineer, Professional Engineer, or equivalent professional registration is preferred.
Experience
- Typically 10–15+ years of relevant civil/infrastructure engineering experience, with substantial experience in ports, maritime infrastructure, marine structures, or major heavy civil infrastructure.
- Demonstrable experience in the design and/or delivery of major port and marine projects.
- Experience through multiple project stages, preferably including feasibility, concept design, detailed design, tendering, and construction.
- Middle East/GCC port infrastructure experience is advantageous.
- Experience working for an engineering consultant, port authority, developer, or major marine contractor is desirable.
Technical Knowledge
Strong knowledge of several of the following areas is expected:

- International maritime and civil engineering standards
Familiarity with relevant guidance and standards such as PIANC, BS/Eurocodes, ACI, AASHTO, CIRIA, ROM, OCIMF and applicable local authority requirements is desirable.
