SAFETY ENGINEER - EV Motor
Business Unit: EPS Mobility
Role: Safety Engineer – EV Traction Motor
The Safety Engineer – EV Traction Motor is responsible for supporting functional safety and product safety activities for EV traction motor systems across the product development lifecycle. The role will work closely with motor design, inverter, controls, system engineering, testing, quality, manufacturing, and supplier teams to identify safety risks and implement appropriate safety requirements and mitigation measures.
The role requires hands-on experience in ISO 26262, HARA, FMEA, FTA, safety requirements, safety mechanisms, fault analysis, and safety validation for automotive or EV systems.
Key Responsibilities
Functional Safety & Risk Analysis
- Support functional safety activities for EV traction motor products as per ISO 26262.
- Perform and maintain HARA, DFMEA/FMEA, FTA, and safety risk analysis.
- Identify safety-critical failure modes related to motor, sensors, inverter interface, and control systems.
- Support definition of Safety Goals, Functional Safety Requirements (FSR), and Technical Safety Requirements (TSR).
- Identify single-point, residual, and latent fault conditions and define appropriate mitigation strategies.
EV Motor Safety
- Analyze safety risks related to:
- Over-temperature and overheating
- Over-current and over-voltage
- Overspeed
- Phase failure/short circuit
- Resolver/position sensor failure
- Insulation failure
- Rotor/shaft and bearing failures
- Unintended torque generation
- Support definition of safe-state behavior and fault-handling mechanisms.
- Work with motor and inverter teams to implement appropriate diagnostic and protection mechanisms.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Automotive, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline.
- 4–6 years of experience in functional safety, EV powertrain, electric motors, automotive electronics, or safety-critical product development.
- Good working knowledge of ISO 26262 and automotive functional safety processes.
- Hands-on experience with HARA, FMEA/DFMEA, FTA, safety requirements, and fault analysis.
- Good understanding of EV traction motors such as PMSM/IPM/SPM, motor sensors, inverter interface, and motor control.
- Knowledge of electrical, thermal, mechanical, and high-voltage safety aspects of EV motors.
- Experience in safety validation, fault injection, diagnostic testing, and failure analysis.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
